Why Do I Want an Insulated Garage Door?
As heating prices rise and concerns over the energy we use to heat our home increase the idea of fitting an Insulated Garage Door to your home is starting to become a no-brainer.
- Does you garage join onto your house?
- Is there a room above the garage?
- Is your garage a workshop?
These are the three most common reasons we fit an insulated garage door. As cutomers are fed up with having a freezing cold room above the garage thats costing too much to heat. Or have a draft into the kitchen or utility room coming under the door from the garage. Or for that matter have had enough of sweeping leaves up that blow under their existing garage door and make a mess of the tools or gym equipment (occasionally even a car) they keep in there. Over the last year we have by far sold more insulated doors than non insulated.
Sectional, Roller or Side Hinged?
At the Garage Door Company Grantham we offer a range of Insulated Garage Doors in different styles and from different manufactures. Here is just a litte infomation about how they work.
Insulated Sectional Garage Door
All Sectional Garage Doors we offer come with option to be insulated. Any of the doors over 2743mm wide are insulated as standard.
The doors are made of a steel panel with insulating foam filler. The thickness of insulation varies across the range, from 20mm to 42mm thickness.
Sectional doors are tracked doors which lift vertically and slide back into your opening. This lifting method means they have rubber side seals which they press firmly against as well as a rubber seal across the bottom and across the header piece.
We fit sectional garage doors from Hormann, Garador, Garage Door Systems and Novofirm.
Insulated Roller Garage Doors
Roller Doors can be either insulated or single skin. Like sectional Garage Doors, Roller Doors are tracked door which lift vertically. this means they have side seals and bottom seal which the door pushes up to, this prevents drafter from coming into the garage around the outside and underneath.
The insulated roller door rolls into a steel box which is usually fitted behind the lintel. We typically fit a full sealed box as this prevents any draft into the garage over the top and also makes for a tidier finish on the inside.
Roller doors come in a variety of sized slats containing different levels of insulation. This ranges from 12 mmto 20mm.
The main benifit of roller doors is the tidy finish they leave inside the garage, enabling better access to roof space inside. The smaller amount of insulation on the doors means they dont have a U rating and arent as good an insulator as the sectional or side hinged garage doors.
We supply roller doors manufactured by Garador, Birkdale, SWS, Cartek and Garage Door Systems. Most often we fit Birkdale product as the after-sales support they help us provide to our customers is exceptional.
Insulated Side Hinged Garage Doors
Insulated Side Hinged Garage Doors are increasing popular. Especially with people looking to fit an insulated door into a small space. One of the real benefits of Side Hinged Garage Doors is that they open out, this is ideal if you have low headroom, thus ruling out options for roller doors, and also have little space inside the garage ruling out option for Sectional Garage Doors.
We fit side hinged door for a lot of customers who use the garage as a workshop and like have easy access to outside through one of the two opening doors, allowing easy ventilation during the hotter summer months whilst giving excellent insulation during the winter.
Our main supplier of Insulated Side Hinged Garage Doors is BGID.
Weather / Threshold Strips
If you have an uneven floor in the garage we can offer a rubber threshold strip which not only cuts out any air gaps caused by the uneven floor but also helps to stop water ingress.
We fix our weatherstrips down with either a high strength adhesive or concrete fixings depending on the surface they are fixed to. We also seal the inside of the tracks of the door with silicone to prevent any run off.
